2L Omar Arauza:
Through the Government Law Clinic, I have been externing at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California in the Criminal Division. Assigned to a trial strategy team in the San Francisco office, I have worked closely with two federal prosecutors on a case heading to trial, drafting jury instructions, statements of fact, and doing legal research for evidentiary motions. I have also assisted in the General Crimes, Transnational Organized Crime, and White-Collar Crime units, drafting legal memoranda and writs while analyzing Department of Justice policies on unique legal issues.
A highlight of my externship was appearing in court, where I argued before a federal judge. This rare opportunity offers firsthand experience in high-stakes advocacy. Working alongside experienced attorneys has strengthened my legal skills, deepened my understanding of prosecutorial discretion, and reinforced the importance of ethical, strategic decision-making.
Assistant U.S. attorneys handle complex, nationally significant cases that shape public safety and justice. Their work requires immense judgment, where even small decisions carry profound consequences. While the DOJ frequently makes headlines, the dedication of federal prosecutors working tirelessly behind the scenes is often overlooked. I have witnessed firsthand the passion, integrity, and tireless commitment of federal prosecutors who serve not for recognition, but out of a genuine belief in justice.
My goal is a career in criminal prosecution. Last summer at the Santa ClaraDistrict Attorney’s Office, I saw prosecution at the state level; now, working on federal cases has broadened my perspective. Federal prosecutions are often more complex, tied to national security and public safety. This experience has reinforced my commitment to rigorous legal work and ethical standards in pursuit of justice.
For me, having stood before a judge and said, “Omar Arauza, representing the United States,” was an absolute honor—one I do not take for granted. This opportunity was deeply meaningful and strengthened my resolve to serve the public.
I highly recommend UC Law SF and the Government Law Clinic. The faculty and staff at UC Law SF have been phenomenal. Their guidance has shaped not just my legal career, but my personal growth, and I am incredibly grateful for their support. This externship offers unparalleled exposure to trial advocacy, federal litigation, and real-world legal practice—including the rare opportunity to argue in federal court. For any law student interested in prosecution or public service, it is an invaluable experience.
